Lasting Powers of Attorney
Choose today, otherwise the court will choose when it's too late
A will works after death. A Lasting Power of Attorney works during your lifetime: it lets people you trust make decisions for you if illness or an accident means you can't. Without one, your family may have to apply to the Court of Protection, which takes months and costs far more.
Every Lasting Power of Attorney you make now is a court application your family won't need later.
Property and financial affairs
- Pay bills, manage bank accounts, savings and pensions
- Deal with benefits and tax
- Sell your home if needed, for example to pay for care
- Can be used as soon as it's registered, with your permission, which helps if you're in hospital
Health and welfare
- Daily care, diet and where you live
- Medical treatment and care home decisions
- Life-sustaining treatment, only if you allow it
- Can only be used once you can't make the decision yourself
Who can be your attorney?
- Anyone aged 18 or over who you trust completely, usually family or close friends
- For money decisions, not someone who is bankrupt or under a debt relief order
- Most people choose 1 to 4, plus a replacement in case one can't act
- You also need an independent certificate provider: someone who has known you for 2 years, or a professional such as your GP. We can help arrange one.

Need it sooner? Our expedited service gets your drafts to you within 2 working days of your call instead of 5, for 30% added to our fee (government fees stay the same). Choose it in the questions. The government's registration time is set by the Office of the Public Guardian and can't be shortened.
